Karyes are the ideal base for activities and excursions in Parnona. It is also a point that the European route E4 passes through. This trail starts from the Pyrenees Mountains, enters the north of Greece Florina and terminates at Zakros, Crete. Many nature lovers, mountain climbing and walking lovers, traversing Karyes following the course of the trail, enjoying the beauties of nature and variations of colors.
The international path E4 is under the supervision of the European Union treking (EWV) and has been designed and marked by the Greek Federation of Mountaineering - Climbing. The long European path, E4, starts from the Pyrenees Mountains in Spain, crossing the borders of Bulgaria - Greece in Promahonas, and then crossing the street Promaxonas – Serres up to the bridge where the Strimona River intersects with the E6 reaching in Greece through former Yugoslavia Republic of Macedonia (fYROM). The path continues along south, crossing the mountains Verni, Vermio, Pieria and Olympus, south of the mountain range of Pindos, the mountains of central Greece and ends at Delphi. Then passing through the Gulf of Corinth in the Peloponnese, the town of Githeio and crosses the sea route to Crete and after that, through Chania up to Lassithi, to pass then from Paphos in Cyprus and arrive in Larnaca. It thus enables the hikers to experience the beauty of the landscape and the unique Greek nature.The route of the trail in Greece is divided into 3 sections: the Northern, Middle and Southern. The northern reaches Meteora, the middle reaches Delphi, and the South part crosses the Peloponnese and leads to Githeio.
The highest altitude on the entire route is the top of Olympus Skolio (2,911 m). The climate is Mediterranean and the route in the southern part of the path (Peloponnese) is quite easier than the northern and one can, for the most part, walk through it all seasons, because the milder climate.The best time to cross the trail in southern Greece is spring and autumn. In Peloponnese, one can traverse the path whereas the mountains are covered with snow until April.
The Greek Federation of Mountaineering - Climbing (EOOA) has published brochures about E4, available in three languages (English, German and French), and additional maps that contain detailed descriptions of the E4 and E6 in two languages (English and German). Also the Greek Mountaineering Association (ERA) supplies you with specially designed maps. The European Path E4 passes through areas of particular natural beauty and historical significance, through traditional villages and beautiful landscapes. The labeling of the route has been edited carefully. It is ideal for summer, as it is located in the shadow of the mountain forest. The classic ascent begins to from Pigi Manganiari (980 m) where it reaches a paved road from the village Palaiopanagia. The path from Pigi Manganiari to the shelter is 1 hour and 45 minutes, with 570 meters height difference, while from the shelter to the Prophitis Elias takes 2 1/2 hours.
Everyone can follow the route and there is no need to be an experienced hiker to experience this activity.
