The Blue Flag Programme is an international system for awarding beaches and marinas that meet 29 strict criteria. More than 50 countries throughout the world participate in the Blue Flag Programe, with Greek beaches being some of the most awarded. In Greece, the Blue Flag Programme is supported by the Greek Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN), which determines which beaches meet the relevant criteria. The beaches should meet a total of 32 criteria regarding to the organization, the cleanliness, information, the safety of the visitors and the protection of coastal environment and the coastal area in general.
In particular, beaches are awarded the Blue Flag based on compliance with 32 criteria covering the following:
1) Environmental Education and Information
2) Water Quality
3) Environmental Management
4) Safety and Services
The awarded beaches of Gythion meet these criteria of the international programme; cleanliness of the water and the coast, organization, safety, the presence of lifeguard, access for AMEA, information on the environmental management and proper operations for managing the protection of the natural environment.
